The Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic, Uyo, in affiliation with City and Guilds of London Institute has formally admitted 850 new students into various programmes of the institution, Addressing the matriculating students at the Polytechnic Mini Stadium, located at Atan Offot, Uyo., the chairman, Governing Council of the institution and primate of the African Church, Dr Emmanuel Josiah Udofia, said the ceremony marks the entry point of every new student in any institution and urged the students, who were privileged to be admitted for the various programmes of the school to show respect to constituted authorities and their colleagues, if they must succeed in their academic pursuit. Udofia remarked that in spite of the lean resources, the institution has over the years managed to stay afloat and assured of proper accountability on the part of the management in the use of resources. Earlier in his welcome speech, the rector of the polytechnic, Victor Williams, FCIM, on behalf of the management and staff welcomed guests and the newly admitted students to the institution, noting that the event was the second combined matriculation ceremony, which was designed to usher in prospective leaders of tomorrow into a journey of fame and greatness in life. Williams, who expressed joy over the large turnout by guests and parents of the matriculating students, maintained that it was heartwarming to have them graced the event. He said as one polytechnic has achieved so much in terms of academics, as it has turned out good products into the labour market, even as the employers of labour are asking for more. He cussed the occasion to enumerate some of the achievements to include raising a bar and setting the tone for pragmatic education that is 60 per cent skills and technology based, construction of Udom Emmanuel International Skill Training and Exhibition Centre, acquisition of about N30 million of workshop and laboratory equipment, graduate's enrollment on NYSC scheme, among others. High point of the event was awards and honouring of seven students of the institution for their brilliant performance and attainment of mark of distinction in academic performance with a total CGP of 3.5 and above. The polytechnic has admitted students into the four faculties existing in the institution, include Faculties of Management/ Arts, Science & Technology, Engineering and Environmental Science.
