The Akwa Ibom State governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has called for greater unity among the Ibibio within and outside the state.
The governor made the call at the Ibibio converge, reception of the Ibibio maiden edition of unity cup teams, conferment of titles/awards presentation to eminent personalities held recently at Asan Ibibio, Ikot Oku Ikono, Uyo.
Governor Udom, who was represented by the commissioner for finance, Mr Linus Nkan, noted that unity is the foundation of every success among a people adding that without unity of purpose nothing has ever been achieved among a people like the Ibibio nation.
He acknowledged that the Ibibio people were reputed for honesty, adding that honesty, cooperation and unity of purpose made their forebears to succeed in the fight for the foundation of Ibibio Union in 1927 and subsequent creation of Cross River, Ogoja and Rivers State (that is the COR state movement).
Udom maintained that the Ibibio nation which is more or less regarded as the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria, can achieve greater height and stand head to head with other ethnic nationalities, if they operate with unity and sincerity of purpose.
He commended the role of Akwa Ibom people in the 2019 general elections which, according to him, made the will and might of the people to prevail over federal might.
Governor Udom Emmanuel urged the leadership of the Ibibio nation to place God first in all their activities, adding that it is only God that can take a nation to success in its endeavour.
The visibly excited governor said the victory at the 2019 polls as well as through the Tribunal to the Supreme Court was a clear indication that it is only God that gives power, adding that but for God the federal might would have overwhelmed the people of the state in the 2019 general elections.
He lauded the Ntison Ibibio III, Obong Essien Ekidem, for his leadership and coordination of the Ibibio nation, adding that the maiden converge was a lofty idea and a step in the right direction.
The governor also commended the organizers of the event and urged them to corroborate with key stakeholders in the Ibibio nation to ensure greater unity, continuous growth and progress of Ibibio nation and Akwa Ibom State at large.
