The speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has called on political-office holders in the state to accord more respect to traditional leaders.
Mr Aniekan Bassey made the call when he visited the paramount ruler of Uruan, Edidem Atakpo Cosmos Nkanga, who is also the Nsom of Uruan at his palace in Ikot Edung, Uruan Local Government Area, recently in the spirit of the 2019 Christmas celebrations.
He pointed out that traditional rulers play important roles in the growth of every society as the custodians of culture and values, and as such must be revered and accorded respect by political office holders.
The speaker presented a new vehicle and other gift items to the Traditional Rulers Council, saying the gesture was to identify with the royal fathers at Christmas and thanked them for their support and prayers.
He also promised to help in the remodelling of the palace of the paramount ruler and sued for peace and unity among the people during and after the festive season.
The paramount ruler thanked the speaker for the visit and prayed God to grant him more wisdom and success in his legislative engagements.
