A former president- general of Oron Union and leader of thought has expressed optimism that Governor Udom Emmanuel will continue to deliver more dividends of democracy desperately desired by Akwa Ibom people but needed no political distraction, especially on year 2023 gubernatorial race in the state.
Sir Asuquo Inuikim, an engineer, spoke extensively at his family new year get-together with friends to mark the silver jubilee anniversary of his marriage at Lekki- Ajah, Lagos, recently, which event looked like a political gathering and cultural festival, with large crowd of Akwa Ibom people in Lagos, associates and well-wishers in attendance.
Appreciating God first for blessings, grace upon his family and for sustaining his marriage to 25 years, the Knight of John Wesley (KJW), Inuikim, pointed out patience, endurance, love and understanding as guiding principles.
On state of development in Akwa Ibom in particular, he said as peaceful and secure the state is now, the governor required the co-operation of all and deep concentration, especially on economy and human capital development to deliver more on his promises, adding that who becomes a governor in 2023 should be waved aside to allow the governor concentrate.
"A gathering like this accords an opportunity to express our feelings and advise our people and leaders, especially as the new year begins. I was in the state during the Christmas period and everywhere I visited, people were talking about 2023 gubernatorial race, including the political class. That is selfishness. Anybody talking about that now is a selfish person.
"They should rather pray for life, good health, God's abiding grace and wisdom and should not be overanxious about things. With such, if care is not taken, there is bound to be division and problem among party leaders.
"The state that our state is now after the Supreme Court judgment of last gubernatorial election is for business of developing it more and not for politics. When the time to play politics comes, they should play but not nowâ€, he said.
Inuikim, a onetime president, Lagos branch of Oron Union, advised residents of the state to think of contributions they could make towards achieving the state of their dream by joining hands with the governor to make the state greater in 2020.
"Let me at this point advise our leaders at different positions of government in our state to be transparent in service to the people because the masses are watching. Government should spread development to all the local government areas and should not only concentrate on the old council areasâ€, he advised.
Ahead of the local government area's election, Inuikim said for the state to have a working local government administration, serious-minded administrators would be needed, and not political appointees.
"It is time to face facts. Our governor knows this. Let me shock everyone of you; some local government areas chairmen do not know even boundaries of their council areas. Some of them live in township and at times go to work in the council. Personal interests have taken people's interest in them and some are ceremonial leaders who concentrate on attending burial, marriage, child dedication, etc, ceremonies. So badâ€, he said.
He urged the people at the grass roots to be fully prepared for them in the next council area election by knowing the people's leader, as it is time to begin grass roots governance as the Federal Government has granted autonomy.
"If we truly love Akwa Ibom, let's all face the fact and join hands with a dedicated and serious- minded governor to build and develop the state together. Governor Udom Emmanuel cannot do it alone. It is time for us to partner togetherâ€, he advised.
