Christians the world over have been charged to be appreciative of whatever they receive from God whether much or little. Pastor Temitayo Awosanya of The Redeemed Christian Church, Spring of Life Parish, stated this during the dedication and thanksgiving of little Miss Mitchel Utibe Effiong recently. Speaking on the topic, A Grateful Heart, drawn from Psalm 103:1-7, Rom 8:28, 1 Thess 5:15-19, the man of God noted that thanksgiving is a must for every believer. "No matter the situation you are faced with, we are to give thanks to God, adding that each situation faced by a genuine Christian is for good. The cleric frowned at lack of gratitude in the present generation, pointing to a situation where God blesses people and they fail to appreciate Him. "We always consider the things we are asking for and fail to take note of the little things He does for us. "The people that are blessed the most are the ones who fail to appreciate God more. In reference to Psalm 103:1-7, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits..., he said, "A heart becomes grateful when it experiences the significance of the love of Christ. A person develops a deeper appreciation for the life he or she has been given, even amidst difficulty. "When they are little things it is easier to get through them; but having a grateful heart will help, whether they are big or small. Whenever you have a grateful heart, you can give thanks even in the midst of calamity.Listing reasons why Christians do not thank God, Awosanya said inability to be thankful to God is as a result of selfishness. He said people ask for too much and fail to realize the abundance God has blessed them with already. "Life is enough to thank God. When everything is going our way, we thank God, but when it is not going our way, we refuse to say thank you. "God requires thank you from us. Some people believe it is their right to love, to have the fresh breath and to go out and come back inside. Do not be self-centred, God deserves our thanksgiving.Another reason why Christians refuse to be thankful to God, according to the man of God, is thoughtlessness which leads to thanklessness. He urged Christians to always meditate on the things of God as well as being thankful as it will encourage and motivate God to do more. On benefits of a grateful heart, the clergyman said it makes both the giver and the receiver glad. "Thank you makes someone feel appreciated. That good feeling will also come back to you in return because whatever we sow is what we reap. "You receive more when you appreciate the little. Be thankful for what you have and you will end up having more. If you concentrate on what you do not have, you will not have enough. Dedicating the baby, the visiting minister, Pastor Longe, said in those days, children were dedicated to different gods and named after them - god of iron, stone, rock, water, tree, thunder etc, and this led to the foundation of a man being affected by various things. He said, when the child grows up, those spirits begin to haunt them, and urged parents to be careful about the names they give to their children.Appreciating God for the new baby, the mother, Mrs Mary Utibe Effiong, thanked God on behalf of her husband for the safe delivery. According to her, "I am happy that God took me through the journey. Though the road was tough and rough, God saw me through and gave me a testimony and reason to rejoice. May His name alone be praised. The event had in attendance the presence of the zonal pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, ministers of the gospel, family, friends and colleagues from far and near.
