Democracy Is Hope Of The People - Esset

The member for Nsit Atai State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly (AKHA) has stated that democracy which he described as the hope of the people was the best form of government which has given the common man a sense of belonging.
Elder Mark Esset who said this during an interaction with newsmen in his office at the Assembly Complex recently, added that the worst level of democracy was better than the best military dictatorship, maintaining that inspite of the present situation, democracy has come to stay in Nigeria.
"We are hopeful that beyond the cloud, there is a silver lining. We grow by the day, we fall, we make mistakes and I am hopeful that democracy will be celebrated in our country as it is in other climes.
There has been some disagreement between the centre and the states, rancour, security challenges, but those have not broken us. I joined other Nigerians to celebrate democracy as the best form of government, he stated.
The lawmaker congratulated Gov Udom Emmanuel for the one-year drive into the completion agenda of the state government, as well as always having the interest of the people at heart.
Esset, who is the chairman House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, lauded the effort of the governor and the medical team in the state in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, calling on the people to adhere strictly to the preventive measures to include washing of hands, using sanitizers, social distancing and the use of face mask.
On the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari, to the autonomy of the Judiciary and the Legislative arm of government, he said it was not all about the assent, but setting modalities to run the system effectively, maintaining that the legislature which was the second arm of government was a place where various interests are represented as one cannot expect everybody to speak in support of a matter every time as they represent different people.
"What happened in the state during the 6th Assembly was the decision of the House. We are from different backgrounds and have different opinions. The 6th Assembly keyed into the judiciary and legislative autonomy. It is not about signing executive bill, it is a constitutional matter which was amended. What ought to have followed was the implementation modalities for smooth running of the policy so it will not bring conflict in the system, it is however a welcome development as it will bring independency to all arms of government which I totally subscribe to and pray for it to work effectively for the good of the people, Esset said.
On the progress of the 7th Assembly, the lawmaker announced that the bills and resolutions were proofs that the Assembly was people oriented, hoping that they will have a robust relationship as they progress to deliver on the promises made to the people at the end of their tenure.
On the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, Esset stated that it has opened the eyes of everyone the world over that where scientific knowledge fails, God remains the surest answer and the Supreme one, as well as teaching the people to improve on their hygienic conditions and be health conscious.
