Akwa Ibom State com missioner of police has inaugurated a 15man advisory committee on Community Policing in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area with a call on them to act as a unifying force between the police, the people and other security agencies to enhance security. Mr Imohimi Edgal, at the inauguration ceremony held at the Council Hall, Ikot Abasi Local Government Headquarters, said the formation of the Community Policing, which remains the philosophy of the police is driven to incorporate the people in policing process in their community. The state commissioner of police, who spoke specifically on the importance of Community Policing and government commitment, said policing should no longer be the function of the police alone but a process which is also driven by the people themselves. He added, "The Police has resolved to partner with the people based on trust, respect and commitment to ensure that people sit down with us and direct us on how we should police our community to ensure peace, stability and low crime rate and respect for fundamental rights of the people, he stated. While congratulating the inaugurated members whose appointment was based on their track records of accomplishment, Mr Edgal said he was optimistic that they would bring their wealth of experience to bear for continuous peace. In his address during the ceremony, the executive chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Obong David David Eshiet, commended the state commissioner of police for the various strategies he has adopted to curtail the menace of criminals in the state. He said the birth of the Community Policing in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area would engender peaceful co-existence and provide security of lives and property. Obong Eshiet said the appointment of people of proven integrity into Community Policing was very important as they will bring their wealth of experience to boost the work of the community. He also added that it will give them the opportunity to contribute their quota towards good governance and the general peace of the area. Earlier in his remark, the paramount ruler of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, HRM Edidem Udo Joe Ntuk Obom, thanked the authority for the careful selection of seasoned administrators to assist in the Community Policing of the area. Edidem Ntuk Obom said though the task ahead was enormous but he was equally optimistic that with the calibre of people inaugurated, Ikot Abasi would continue to witness an unprecedented low level of crime. In his vote of thanks, the clan head of Ikpa Nnung Assang, Etebom Celestine I. Udia, expressed gratitude to the inspector general of police, Abubakar M. Adamu for his foresight to initiate Community Policing programme as well as the unprecedented role played by the state commissioner of police, Mr Imohimi Edgal. Etebom Udia called on other stakeholders in the state to appreciate the gesture by teaming up for the security of lives and property. Members of the Advisory Committee on Community Policing inaugurated are: the executive chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, Obong David David Eshiet, divivisional police officer - CSP Loveday Oputibeya, Edidem Udo Joe Ntuk Obom, Etebom Celestine I. Udia, Etebom Clement Mark Idemudo and Eteidung Eniema Eshiet. Others are Elder Stephen Udosen, Elder Nsisong Ntuenibok, Very Rev. Nseobong Edem, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim, Elder Augustine Ekpene, Chief Stephen Umosen, Chief Richard Evanson Ukpe, Comrade Idongesit James Udobia as well as Lady Comfort Nsikan Usoro - representative of women leader.
