Commissioner Urges Parents To Report Rape Cases Against Children

The commissioner for health has reminded parents to report rape cases to the appropriate authorities for prompt action to serve as deterrent to others.

Dr Dominic Ukpong who gave the advice while playing host to a delegation from the Sustaining Health Outcomes Through- The Private Sectors (SHOPS) Plus, in his office, recently said parents should counsel their children against rape, while girls should avoid being raped and if it happens , they should report same to the appropriate authorities for necessary action. Ukpong further warned parents to desist from accepting gifts from rapists who commit the crime only to free them, whereas such cases should be brought to the fore for the law to take its full course.

He urged families to endeavour to pursue suspected cases and to resist the attempt for gifts by suspects in exchange for the offence, adding that such practice would not heal the victim's wound. The commissioner extolled the organization for complementing the state government's effort in family planning, noting that this was essential for families' well-being and economic growth.

Ukpong observed that children, especially minors nowadays were resorting to family planning measures, whereas it should be for the matured and the issue of morality strictly adhere to by parents. He said that family planning should not be abused nor be used as a tool to encourage indiscriminate sex among teenagers. He, however, maintained that to avoid unwanted pregnancies and abortions, women should avail themselves of the family planning services. Earlier, the acting technical director, SHOP Plus,

Dr Paulina Akanet, said the agency's one year programme was designed to improve family planning in the state. She hinted that so far, capacity training and consumables had been provided to service providers and receivers with the enabling environment created by the state government and support from the Ministry of Health
