Gov Emmanuel, A'Ibom PDP Condole APC Over Demise Of State Chairman

In what has been hailed as a
great display of bipartisan
ship which has taken many
people in the state by surprise,
given the highly contentious at-
mosphere that enveloped the
state during last year's guberna-
torial elections, the Akwa Ibom
governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel
has condoled with the family of
the late chairman of the All Pro-
gressive Congress (APC), Mr Ini
Okpoido, who passed on
Wednesday after a brief illness.
A message of condolence by his
chief press secretary, Mr Ekerete
Udoh, Emmanuel said he was
"deeply saddened by the sad and
unfortunate demise of the chairman
of the APC in the state, Okpoido,
whose sad event took place August
5, 2020.
"On behalf of myself and family,
I extend our deepest condolences to
you and your dear family on this
very sad and unfortunate develop-
ment.
"Even though you belonged to a
different political party, there is no
denying our common humanity and
the abiding desire to engender a
speedy development of our dear
state and ensure a better quality of
life for our people which you shared
and which is what I have sworn to
execute.
"You were a great Akwa Ibom
patriot and I pray the Almighty God
to grant you eternal rest and your
family and loved ones the fortitude
to bear this sad loss," the message
read in part.
In a related development, the
Akwa Ibom chapter of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) has con-
doled with the All Progressives Con-
gress (APC) family on the sadden-
ing and unfortunate passing away
of their state chairman, Obong Ini
Okopido.
The PDP in a statement signed
by the publicity secretary, Mr
Borono Bassey, said, "Okopido by
the virtue of his position and ac-
tions as the Akwa Ibom chairman
of the APC had given himself to the
patriotic task of deepening the con-
versations about democracy in our
dear state.
"We also commiserate with mem-
bers of the deceased's family whom
the late state chairman has left be-
hind. We pray with fervency that
the APC family and the members of
immediate family of the deceased
will find the fortitude to bear the
loss and strength to carry on in this
tragic moment. Please do accept our
deepest condolences."
The APC in the state described
the death of Okopido as a devastat-
ing loss not only to the deceased's
family but the entire party and the
state's political sphere.
A joint statement by the Akwa
Ibom APC Foundation signed by
its director-general, Dr Effiong Etok
and the director of Media, Publicity
and Strategy, Comrade Ime Silas,
said the late Okopido was "a fine
progressive and a consummate
gentleman."
"We are short of words to de-
scribe how devastating this loss is,
not only to the deceased family, but
the entire APC family and indeed
the Akwa Ibom State's political
sphere.
"The late Okopido was a fine pro-
gressive, who put in his best in a bid
to ensure the enthronement of a
truly people-oriented government
in Akwa Ibom through the instru-
mentality of the APC.
"He was a consummate gentle-
man, a political savvy whose tenac-
ity and astuteness in party leader-
ship will greatly be missed.
"We pray the Almighty God to
grant the soul of our dear departed
State chairman a peaceful repose,
even as we urge Him to grant his
immediate family, the entire APC
family in the state and his political
associates, the constancy to bear the
irreplaceable loss"
