Akwa Ibom Retains Second Position
The 3rd edition of the National Youth Games that was held in Ilorin came to a close on Saturday with Akwa Ibom, harvesting 16 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze to retain the second position it won in the last edition on the medals table.
Delta State came top with 21 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze medals while Ondo State was placed third with 12 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze medals.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung who declared the weeklong event closed commended states that sent in their contingents to participate in the event.
He equally thanked the host state and the University of Ilorin for providing facilities to ensure the successful hosting of the event and solicited for such cordial relationship in future.
Also, speaking the University of Ilorin Vice Chancellor represented by his Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Nike S. Ijaya commended the organizers for successfully organizing the meet and equally thanked the Federal Government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development for their relationship with the school in the area of sports development.
In the final of the 4x100 boys, Akwa Ibom produced gold medal (boys) while the girls gave silver. Also, in the 4x100 mixed races, Akwa Ibom also picked gold.
The closing ceremony was watched by the senior special assistant to the Governor of Sports matters and Chairman of Akwa United FC, Elder Paul Bassey, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Coach Aniedi Dickson and the Director of Sports Coach Lawrence Iquaibom among others.
