The family head of Nung Ikono in Nung Oku, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area has added his voice to the call for community policing towards the prevention and control of crime in Nigeria.
Speaking with newsmen Obong Eventus Edem Hillary said community policing is a good idea if well organized to avoid recruiting thieves in the process.
“We need a national orientation where the people will be made to understand the benefits of community policing and I believe the people will embrace it.
Community policing will not function well where police is not civil. A police officer is expected to be friendly, move around, get closer to the people and interact with them he opined.
He said the family and village heads have very important role to play in maintaining peace and security in our communities and urged government to work closely with the traditional rulers to reduce the rate of violent crime in Nigeria.
“Government cannot operate well without the family and village heads. They really help in maintaining peace in their communities” he maintained.
Hillary, who is a linguist by training, commended the state government for encouraging the teaching and learning of Ibibio language in schools saying, that is one way to preserve the language from dying.
“Any language that is not spoken faces extinction, our people are too liberal and sometimes feel inferior in using our language in public places. We should be proud of our indigenous language and use it anywhere we find our brothers.
“I am happy that government has introduced Ibibio language as a subject in nursery schools. A child trained in more than one language is more intelligent in reasoning.
While commending some radio stations that have Ibibio programme he called on others who are yet to do so to quickly create programmes that will appeal to the Ibibio audience.
He congratulated Governor Udom Emmanuel on his victory at the appeal court and urged him to carryall Akwa Ibom people along in respective of the political party they belong as well as sustain the existing peace in the state.
“I doff my hat for His Excellency for transforming that 10th anniversary hotel to decent work environment.
Twice I had bad encounter with criminals who used that building as their hideout,” he added.
